Geography
Geography is taught weekly over three half terms, each academic year. Each Geography enquiry has an overarching enquiry question, broken down into an ancillary question for each week. This enquiry-based approach enables pupils to achieve higher-order outcomes by interrogating information and applying skills from one context to another. The overarching enquiry questions relate to topics, places, themes, and issues that are relevant to the present day. The key question enquiry structure adopts the approach of initially identifying where the pupils are in terms of their experience or knowledge of the focus of the enquiry. Pupils are then supported in completing several ancillary question investigations to progress their understanding.
Causeway Green uses ‘Kapow’ to deliver the requirements of the national curriculum for Geography. Kapow Primary’s Geography scheme of work aims to inspire pupils to become curious and explorative thinkers with a diverse knowledge of the world; in other words, to think like a geographer. Using Kapow enables the pupils to develop the confidence to question and observe places, measure and record necessary data in various ways, and analyse and present their findings. Through using their scheme of work, Causeway Green aims to build an awareness of how Geography shapes our lives at multiple scales and over time. We hope to encourage pupils to become resourceful, active citizens who will have the skills to contribute to and improve the world around them.
Our Geography curriculum encourages:
·A strong focus on developing both geographical skills and knowledge.
·Critical thinking, with the ability to ask perceptive questions and explain and analyse evidence.
·The development of fieldwork skills across each year group.
·A deep interest and knowledge of pupils’ locality and how it differs from other areas of the world.
·A growing understanding of geographical concepts, terms and vocabulary.
There are opportunities for pupils of all abilities to develop their skills and knowledge in each teaching unit, the progression planned into the scheme of work means that the pupils are increasingly challenged as they move through the school.
Our humanities lead is Mr Mark Chatterley.
